The Huffington Post recently published a piece regarding the change in culture and mindset surrounding divorces in the United States in an article entitled “Divorce American Style is Changing.”

As recent as 20 years ago, divorce used to be looked at as shameful and immoral.  Any feelings of happiness surrounding a divorce had to be kept at bay for fear of how their friends, family, and the public in general might view them.  Many politicians would even have to try to completely avoid divorce for fear that it would hurt their chances of winning the public’s approval.

However, much of the perception and feelings regarding divorce in this country have changed immensely.  While many people would go into a public grieving or mourning period post-divorce, now many are openly celebrating their freedom.

These celebrations are becoming increasingly popular, as planning “divorce parties” is now becoming a booming business.   One contributor to the article notes that she believes divorce parties are more popular due to the current generation’s awareness on how “precious and fragile life is” after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  She also notes that people wish to celebrate every milestone now, even the tough ones.

Some party planners choose to refer to these “divorce parties” as “freedom fests.”  This way the individual is celebrating his or her decision to live a new and independent life.   Generally, men throw freedom fests in order to have a release of their frustration and anger, while women throw them as a way of indulging.

While to some, a party celebrating a divorce might seem unnecessary, extravagant, and over the top, many relationship therapists encourage their clients to consider having such a party because they can be therapeutic.  These experts believe that the parties have a positive effect on their clients going through a divorce.
