Divorce Do's and Dont's

Find out what you should and shouldn't do during the divorce process.

Getting divorced does not always have to be a negative experience.  In many ways getting divorced can make you a better person; you just have to remain open minded.  In her Huffington Post article, “10 Unexpected Silver Linings of Divorce”, Carolyn Martin explores the upsides of divorce.

Martin describes herself now, post-divorce, as more self-confident and less afraid.  One of the obstacles she details specifically is the infallibility of motherhood.  She struggled grasping the idea of only being a part-time mother, letting go of her children when they were to be in their father’s care.  Martin explains her worst fear as another woman becoming a significant part of her children’s lives.  However, she overcame these fears upon realizing that she can never be replaced; she is their mother 100% of the time even if she no longer lives with them 100% of the time.  There is no cap on a child’s love; another person in their life does not mean that they run out of love to give.

Martin says she has been blessed to not only have not lost any old friends through her divorce, but to have made new friends also.  Her friends, new and old, have committed themselves to helping her get through the tough time.

Obviously divorce is not part of anyone’s life plan; however, there is certainly a more positive light at the end of the tunnel.  Martin emphasizes that although she was not able to keep control over her marriage, she has now learned that there were good reasons why.  When missed job opportunities or other disappointments come along now, she sees the events as happening for a reason.  There are many things in life that you cannot control, but accepting your divorce will allow you to enjoy the rest of your life while embracing the unexpected benefits.

Are you considering filing for divorce or separation?  When a couple decides to dissolve their marriage, there are many aspects that need to be addressed including child custody and financial support, parenting time/visitation, spousal support and equitable distribution, to name a few.  These are subjects that Jay D.
