A recent article detailed how changes in parenting styles are taking a toll on marriages throughout the United States. The piece argues that over the past few generations, parenting has become synonymous with religion and that like faith, parents must never go against their children or speak negatively about them to others. However, it seems that this black and white analysis leaves much to be desired as children, like their parents, are rarely flawless.

The Quartz op-ed examined a 2005 New York Times essay where author, Ayelet Waldman explained to readers that she loved her husband more than her three children. Readers throughout the country were shocked and instantly labeled Waldman a bad and unfit mother. While this argument may be familiar to some and foreign to others, it draws light to gender inequality that mothers and fathers often encounter. For example, women are expected to focus solely on motherhood. Any attention paid to a job or a husband is often viewed as energy that is being taken away from the children of the marriage. Conversely, fathers are frequently viewed as being able to juggle all of these responsibilities and do not experience criticism if they pay attention to their spouse, job duties, etc.

Like most things in life, children do not remain in one place forever. As they grow up and the composition of your household shifts, it is important that you and you spouse remain on the same team so that you can effectively handle each individual and familial challenge that comes your way.
