New Trend in Divorce Proceedings

Last month, one of our blog articles detailed a recent trend that we’ve seen re-invent traditional divorce norms throughout European countries. Not to fear– this “Divorce Hotel” option is now available to Americans, just a few hours north of Manhattan in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Developer Jim Halfens was so pleased with his enterprise in the Netherlands that he decided to expand to the States and now, for a flat fee ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 depending on the complexity of issues, divorcing couples can enjoy a weekend at the chic Saratoga Spring’s Gideon Putnam Resort complete with swimming pools, spas, and tennis courts. Included in this fee are two separate rooms for each party and use of attorneys for settlement purposes.

While guests “check in” Friday afternoon and depart Sunday, the divorce is not finalized until the necessary paperwork is sent out and signed by a Judge. Halfens and his business enterprises expect that this service will be utilized mostly by New Yorkers looking for a quick split but noted for the New York Post that all American citizens are eligible for services so long as they agree to use the Hotel’s attorneys and mediators.

With as many as 1.2 million people filing for divorce each year in the United States, this may seem like an appealing option however, critics have been quick to note that this process is not for everyone. In particular, couples that are not in agreement over the majority of issues relevant to their case will likely find this option unsuccessful. Couples facing complex and difficult issues such as division of unusually large assets and child custody may experience difficultly as well.
