U.S New and World Report recently published an article that detailed a new report in the August issue of the American Sociological Review which admonishes the previously accepted notion that women who achieve a higher level of education than their spouse are more likely to file for divorce. The sample size surveyed for the study demonstrated that marriages where the wife is in fact more formally educated than the husband are no more likely to end in divorce as compared to marriages where the husband holds a higher degree. Further, the study concludes that relationships where both spouses share equal levels of education are even less likely to end in divorce. These findings contradict various studies conducted between 1950 and 1970 which concluded that women holding higher degrees were in fact more likely to file for divorce.

Not only does this research point toward modern divorce trends, but it also quiets gender equality concerns. Previous studies often demonstrated that men and women alike avoided relationships and marriages where the female held a higher degree than the male. The directors of the study note that their work is one of the first projects to examine couples married within the last 20 years and affirm that more research still needs to be done, particularly in the realm of income disparity between married men and women.
