The NY Post recently published an article entitled, “Why marriages fail: Romance just isn’t enough” about a study done by the Austin Institute for the Study of Family and Culture.  The Austin Institute surveyed 4,000 divorced adults ranging in ages from 18-60 for a survey entitled “Relationships in America”.

For the past forty or so years, the divorce rate has been above 40%, thus the purpose of the study was to get to the root of the issue regarding why Americans get divorced.

The study found that women are more likely to file for divorce than their male counterparts, as nearly 55% of the women surveyed said they wanted the divorce more, as opposed to only 20% of men who said they wanted it more.  Another surprising survey finding was that marriage is thriving more amongst the upper classes in comparison to those in the middle and lower classes.

The most common reason for a divorce is sexual infidelity, as approximately 37% of the people surveyed cited that as the reason for their split.  However, many women cite their spouse’s “not meeting their emotional needs” or their spouse’s “immaturity” as major reasons contributing to why they wanted a divorce.  Interestingly, there was no correlation between the age of the respondent and the likelihood for citing their spouse’s immaturity as the reason for their split.  Thus the researchers found that despite the fact that the average age when an individual marries is getting later and later, the issue of spousal immaturity does not seem to be an issue that is fading away.
