The percentage of adults in the United States who are married is at an all-time low.  US News posted an article about a study done by Cornell University and the University of Central Oklahoma.  The researchers attempted to investigate why the marriage rate is so low by looking to cohabitating couples.

They found that many young adults chose not to get married due to their fears of the emotional, financial, social and legal consequences of divorce.  Sixty-seven percent of the study’s subjects stated that they were worried about dealing with the “fallout of divorce.”

The researchers found that working-class people had a less favorable view on marriage than their middle-class counterparts.  The middle-class people involved with the study viewed cohabitation as a “natural stepping-stone” to a future marriage, where the working-class people involved with the study were more likely to feel that marriage was “just a piece of paper” and that there would be no real difference between a marriage and their current existing relationship.
