Divorce Do's and Dont's

Find out what you should and shouldn't do during the divorce process.

Have you ever heard the expression “the man of the house?” This expression doesn’t mean what it once used to. Now in the 21st century where it is socially acceptable for a woman to join the work force, there is an increasing amount of women who are not only the primary caregivers in a family, but also the primary breadwinners. These changes in family dynamics have also led to changes in the dynamics of divorce.

Newsday in their recent article titled, More Men Seeking Alimony, Divorce Lawyers Say, has reported that divorce attorneys have seen an increase in men asking their ex-wives for spousal support. Spousal support or also known as alimony is defined as a legal obligation on a person to provide financial support to his or her spouse before or after marital separation or divorce.

Traditionally, a husband paid alimony to his former wife, but as Newsday reported, “Last year, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers surveyed its 1,600 members and found that 47 percent had noticed an increase in the number of women who are paying alimony.” With gender roles becoming less defined men should not hesitate to seek out alimony from their spouse. Regardless of your gender, if you are going through a divorce it is important to put your pride to the side and seek out the support you need.

So, if you are seeking a divorce and plan on requesting spousal support, Long Island Attorney Jay D. Raxenberg can help!
