Divorce Do's and Dont's

Find out what you should and shouldn't do during the divorce process.

This past week, the Huffington Post published an article entitled “Divorcing Parents: 4 Ways Your Can Be Super Heroes To Your Children,” written by Michael Aurit, the Founder of The Aurit Center for Divorce Mediation in Scottsdale, Arizona. This article directed the reader’s attention to ways that parents can discuss their divorce with their children and how to make the divorce process easier for everyone.

No divorce is easy, but especially not when children are involved. To help the children throughout the divorce process, Aurit suggests telling the children only what they need to know. Being honest with children is important, but instead of telling them every detail, Aurit suggests simplifying the situation only to what is necessary for the children to get through the divorce.

Aurit then suggests that when parents do speak to children about the divorce, there should never be criticizing the other parent, because “there should be a proactive support of your children’s relationship with your co-parent.” Aurit suggests this in order to build a foundation of mutual understanding, which would later “allow positive communications about your co-parent come more naturally.”Aurit provides the following tips:

(1) Refer to one another “Mommy” and “Daddy” or “Mom and “Dad” rather than “your Mom/Mother” or “your Dad/Father.”

(2) Sincerely encourage your children to call or FaceTime the other during your own parenting time.

(3) Celebrate the time, activities, and fun moments your children had with your co-parent.

(4) Have a photo–or a few–of your children with your co-parent in your home.

(5) Make a list of ten positive memories or good characteristics of your co-parent.

Getting divorced can be difficult, for both the couple and the children. In order to make it easier, there needs to be a supportive relationship between the parents and children.
